Max Kruse regrets ever leaving Union Berlin to join VfL Wolfsburg

Striker Max Kruse admitted that he made a mistake by moving to VfL Wolfsburg from Bundesliga side Union Berlin.

Max Kruse expressed regret over his move to VfL Wolfsburg and expressed his belief in his former club, Union Berlin, for a top-four finish in the Bundesliga.

The 34-year-old striker remains a free agent after his release from Wolfsburg last November and has been linked with clubs in Germany and the United States.

In a recent appearance on German television's "Doppelpass", Kruse said, "In talking to clubs, it wasn't the sporting side of things that determined things. Several of them were afraid to make the move.

"My sporting abilities aren't in doubt. I would like to play in the Bundesliga again, though it would be interesting to play in the US or Canada. We'll see what, if anything, happens."

Kruse also addressed his move from Union Berlin to Wolfsburg, stating, "I was 33 last year. I couldn't turn down that offer. A year later, it's easy to say: the switch was a mistake. Of course, it didn't end positively for me."

When asked about Union Berlin's prospects in the Bundesliga, Kruse predicted a top-four finish for the club, and said, "I don't know if it will be enough for a title in the end. But I'm sure it will be at least the Champions League.

"Nothing will unsettle Union. That's their greatest strength. No player is above the club. They don't have a 5 million earning star."

Kruse also praised the unique atmosphere at the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei, "The atmosphere resembles that of fifth division clubs. It's all very unique. Packs of them go out to eat together. That simply doesn't exist at other clubs."
