Mmowa Kekana: Professionalising the league is an urgent matter

First Touch Ladies coach Mmowa Kekana has added his voice to the growing calls for the professionalisation of the Hollywoodbets Super League, adding that it’s an urgent matter.

Kekana says that Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies has dominated the league since inception due to the resources at their disposal, and most teams are unable to compete with them as they don’t have the same financial muscle. He adds that the likes of First Touch Ladies and many other individually owned teams are struggling as the owners have to dig deep into their pockets.

''The reason is clear, it is because teams like First Touch and Copperbelt - owners run the team from their pockets. The team that is taking the number one spot is only Sundowns because they have resources,'' said Kekana.

Kekana says that because of limited funding, most clubs always run the risk of introducing new players every season as the good ones are poached by those with resources. First Touch Ladies is currently 11th on the log standings after four wins, a draw and seven losses. But Kekana says they are here to stay and will finish in the top eight.

''It is a bad season because here in the Hollywoodbets Super League, you have a good player and the bigger teams come and take that player. But I push, and I push for top eight,'' added Kekana.

Kekana was speaking after his side was walloped 6-0 by the reigning Hollywoodbets Super League champions, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies over the weekend. At the break, the Brazilians were 2-nil up.
