Morgan Gould: Joe Hudla influenced my broadcasting career

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender and SABC Sport analyst Morgan Gould insists Ukhozi FM commentator Joe Hudla inspired him to branch into broadcasting after retiring from football.

Gould retired in 2021 after helping Sekhukhune secure a promotion to the top flight form the National First Division.

Speaking to Victor Molefe on the Prime Time Sports Show on Ukhozi FM Gould says Hudla's commentary impressed him because of how he did not only focus on strikers but defenders as well which contributed to him [Gould] being a well-known defender.

"To be honest I met Joe Hudla while I was still a player, so I took the initiative to listen to him on the radio and realised that he was doing something very different. The spotlight is always on strikers like Majoro [Lehlohonolo], Benny [McCarthy], he [Joe] put me on the map in a way that actually changed my life and I'll forever be grateful to him because meeting him actually opened my eyes and I decided to work harder," Gould said.

"The fact that he used to talk about me during my playing days in the commentary box gave me so much motivation not to let him down and other people who were exactly like him, who were always backing me."

The former defender now works as an analyst on SABC Sport [Laduma] and also as an ambassador for the MTN8.

Orlando Pirates will face Stellenbosch FC in the final of the MTN8, after the Sea Robbers secured a brilliant victory against Cape Town City at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday and Stellies sent Mamelodi Sundowns packing at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Gould says he’s impressed by what Stellies have achieved over the years.

"They set a target for themselves that in the fifth year they want to win a trophy and they won the Black Label Knockout. With the very five-year plan, they wanted to sell four players and they sold eight so that goes to show that their long-term plan is working for them,” he added.

“Whichever player they buy fits in perfectly to their squad and the manual is the same. They don't change their playing style to accommodate certain players, they have a manual that clearly works for them."
