The 25-year-old, born in Stevenage, England, honed his skills at Arsenal's Hale End Academy before spells at Southampton and Burnley. His move to Bayer Leverkusen has been career-defining, with Tella playing a role in the team's domestic double triumph and earning his debut for Nigeria.
Despite his achievements, the pacey attacker has struggled to secure regular minutes under Xabi Alonso this season. Reflecting on Leverkusen's emphatic 5-0 victory over RB Salzburg, Tella admitted his frustration at not contributing to the scoresheet.
"Yeah, of course, I'm an attacker. I always want to score and be part of the goals for the team, but I've had some difficulties this season," Tella said. "In the last two games, we've shown great character, and I hope this momentum continues."
Acknowledging his limited game time, Tella remained optimistic, noting the depth and competitiveness within the squad. "Everyone wants to play more, but with the way the team is performing, everyone will get their opportunity. It's just about being ready when it comes," he added.
When asked about returning to the Super Eagles, Tella stressed the importance of earning his place through consistent performances for Leverkusen.
"It's an honour to represent Nigeria, but I need to focus on playing here first. I have to take small steps, improve, and work hard. If I perform well for my club, the national team recognition will follow," he stated.
Leverkusen currently sit sixth in their UEFA Champions League group, trailing Liverpool by five points. Tella, however, remains focused on contributing to his team's success and using it as a springboard for his international aspirations.
