New Barcelona signing Dani Olmo leaves Spain camp due to injury

Spain forward Dani Olmo will be absent from Sunday's UEFA Nations League match against Switzerland due to a minor knee injury and is set to return to Barcelona early for treatment.

Olmo, 26, was substituted in the 82nd minute of Spain's goalless draw with Serbia in Belgrade on Thursday. While sources indicate that the injury is not severe, it has been decided that Olmo should skip the Switzerland game and head back to his club for further assessment.

Barcelona, who have won all four of their LaLiga matches so far this season, will resume their league campaign against Girona next Sunday. Coach Hansi Flick will be hopeful that Olmo can return in time for this fixture.

Olmo joined Barcelona this summer from RB Leipzig for 55 million euros, but he missed the first two games of the season due to registration issues related to the club's compliance with LaLiga's financial fair play regulations. Once registered, he made an immediate impact, scoring the winning goal in the 2-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano and adding another goal in the 7-0 triumph over Real Valladolid before the international break.

Barcelona's midfield is currently stretched thin, with Olmo being used by Flick in this area. Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, and Marc Bernal are all injured, while Oriol Romeu and Ilkay Gundogan have departed the club in the transfer window. De Jong could make a return in the coming weeks, and Gavi is in the final stages of his recovery from an ACL injury that has kept him out for nearly a year. However, Bernal is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the season.

In addition to midfield concerns, Flick is also managing defensive injuries, with centre-backs Ronald Araújo and Andreas Christensen both unavailable for the foreseeable future. Up front, Ansu Fati is anticipated to be available after the international break, bolstering Barcelona's attacking options following his return from a season-long loan at Premier League club Brighton.
