Newcastle's Anthony Gordon could miss Liverpool clash due to red card

Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon is facing a three-match suspension following a red card in his side's recent match against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The incident occurred during a tangle with Brighton's Jan Paul van Hecke, leading referee Anthony Taylor to show Gordon a straight red card.

The 24-year-old, who joined Newcastle from Everton, is now set to miss three crucial fixtures, including the upcoming Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley.

The suspension could also affect Newcastle's fixtures leading up to the March international break.

In response to the decision, Newcastle United are considering lodging an appeal against the red card.

Should the appeal be successful, Gordon would be cleared to return to contention for his side's upcoming matches.

Keith Hackett, the former Premier League referee, has weighed in on the incident, suggesting that the red card decision may have been harsh given the context of the play.

"When you place your hand, or hands, into the face of the opponent with a degree of force, it really leaves the referee - in this case Anthony Taylor - little option other than to show a red card and dismiss the player from the field," Hackett told Football Insider.

"There's no clear and obvious error, there's no VAR intervention on that one, Taylor had no option other than to dismiss him."

However, Taylor's decision is final unless overturned through the appeal process.
