Despite confirming his commitment to Athletic Club for the upcoming La Liga season, with his contract running until June 2027, the highly sought-after Spanish international faces two main possibilities: extending his stay or moving elsewhere.
This leaves the future of the European champion, who is in high demand from several top clubs, still uncertain. His representative, Felix Tainta, addressed these issues in a recent interview with SER Deportivos Navarra.
To recap, following a summer filled with speculation about a potential move to FC Barcelona, Williams has reaffirmed his dedication to Athletic Club, who will be competing in Europe once again.
This decision aligns with what Tainta had previously mentioned: "In the end, the boy has decided to stay. He wanted to continue for another year. We are here to support him in all his decisions and provide advice, but ultimately, he is the one who has chosen to stay."
The "one more year" remark takes on greater significance when considering comments from Tainta and his partner Juani Oyaga, who addressed issues related to Osasuna but ended up discussing what is likely their star player at present.
Tainta reflected on a hectic summer: "It has been an intense and stressful few months. Nico has had an incredible year, spectacular. For me, he was the best player of the European Championship. Naturally, we have been very busy, with numerous trips."
Listening to comments from Lamine Yamal, Williams' friend and star at FC Barcelona, it seems the door is still open for him: "I don't know if Nico Williams will come next year; it's his decision. Of course, I would love to play with Nico every week; he's my friend," Yamal stated in an interview on El Hormiguero. As he himself notes, the decision rests solely with Williams.
Tainta echoed this sentiment, emphasising that the choice ultimately lies with the player: "I haven't moved Nico Williams from Athletic; he chose to stay. When a player and his family want to stay at a club, they stay, and when they don't, they leave.
"The agent doesn't force the player to leave. Every person and player decides where they want to be," Tainta concluded.
