Nigeria capable of winning AFCON says defender Kenneth Omeruo

Nigeria defender Kenneth Omeruo has said there remains no doubt The Super Eagles can replicate their 2013 success and win the AFCON.

Speaking ahead of their final group match against Guinea-Bissau, which will determine their fate at the tournament, the player said the initial target was three points tonight.

But when asked directly whether Nigeria can go all the way, Omeruo did not hesitate to back the side coached by Jose Peseiro.

''I believe we have the squad and the capacity to win the AFCON, but like I said it starts from each games - we  have to focus  on Guinea-Bissau and win that game and the next game, until we get there [the final]. I do believe we have the squad to do it,'' said Omeruo.

The Turkish-based centre back added that there’s enough evidence within the camp to suggest they are a strong unit and even go beyond instructions from Peseiro in an attempt to get the job done.

''There are somethings that you know happens in house that obviously I can not say in the press conference but the coaches are really strict with us and in respect of our concentration - because he [coach] wants us to be focused all the time and obviously we also have meetings between ourselves, for when the coach can't talk to us'' added Omeruo.

Guinea-Bissau could be a banana peel if Nigeria take them lightly, but Omeruo pointed to the results elsewhere in the competition so far as a way to insist The Super Eagles can’t afford to drop their guard.

''I think it is going to be an interesting game because they are a team we are familiar with and some people said it was going to be an easy game but there's no easy game, especially in this tournament, a lot of the big teams are really struggling and that goes to show how improved African teams are now. We are going to approach that game with all seriousness and try to win that game'' he concluded.
