Nkosinathi Sibisi's strike keeps Orlando Pirates in the hunt against Polokwane

Orlando Pirates kept their Betway Premiership title hopes alive with a gritty 1-0 victory over Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, thanks to a second-half finish from Nkosinathi Sibisi.

While Pirates' attacking flair has often made headlines this season, it was their resolute defence and clinical finishing that sealed all three points this time around.

Sibisi's 67th-minute goal proved to be the difference in a tight encounter, helping the Buccaneers remain second on the log with 46 points from 23 matches â” just 12 behind runaway leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played three games more.

The win keeps Jose Riveiro's men within touching distance of the title race, especially with games in hand.

The hosts, Polokwane City, had their own ambitions going into the match. A victory could have catapulted them to third place, but Phuti Mohafe's charges stay in sixth spot with 34 points from 24 matches, as their push for a top-three finish took a dent.

The first half was evenly balanced, with both sides carving out decent chances. Sipho Chaine stood tall in goal for Pirates, making crucial saves to deny Bonginkosi Dlamini and Oswin Appollis, while Relebohile Mofokeng came close for the visitors, narrowly missing the target after a defensive slip by Polokwane.

Mohau Nkota, a standout for the Buccaneers, caused problems for the Rise and Shine backline with his pace and trickery, forcing a fine stop from goalkeeper Langelihle Ndlovu midway through the opening half.

After a goalless first 45 minutes, the Buccaneers emerged sharper in the second period. Their efforts were rewarded when Sibisi pounced on a loose ball in the box to fire home from close range in the 67th minute.

Despite a spirited push from Polokwane in the final stages, Pirates' backline, marshalled by Sibisi and company, held their shape to make sure they keep a clean sheet, wrapping up a vital win on the road.

As the league enters the final stretch, every point counts â” and for Pirates, this hard-fought win not only brings momentum, but belief that the title race is far from over.
