No time to underestimate any team in the HWBSL - Gabriela Salgado

JVW midfielder Gabriela Salgado says they will not underestimate relegation-threatened Thunderbirds Ladies, when the two sides face-off at the University of Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon.

The Bedfordview outfit has enjoyed a decent start in the second round of the Hollywoodbets Super League, coming off back to back wins over Richmond United and Lindelani Ladies.

Coach Mitchell Stevens' charges will aim to maintain their winning momentum against the struggling Thunderbirds, who have not won a single match in their 17 outings this season, and Salgado believes sticking to what they know will be key.

"I think we have figured out our tactics as a team, with games being different tactics, of course, but as a team we know how we want to go forward and how we want to defend, and we don't underestimate any other team," said Salgado.

"The league has improved so much – yes, they are at the bottom, but they come and play football and they want to win, so at the end of the day we need to stick to what we know and approach each game the same as we would with any other team."

JVW dropped out of the top six at the beginning of the current campaign after losing some of their senior players and having issues with registering new players.

However, they have since managed to sort out most of their administrative challenges, which has quickly resulted in the team being on form in their last few matches.

Salgado believes they have found their beat as players and is adamant that they now have what it takes to emulate last season’s top three finish with 63 points – just 12 behind second-placed University of the Western Cape.

"Obviously, last year we finished in the top [three], it was our plan going into this season. It does take hard work and dedication, and we knew that number seven for JVW is not on," she added.

"So we worked hard and put our heads together as a team, and we said that we will keep fighting – at the end of the day, something has to give and we did well and jumped up to fourth. We just hope to keep going and keep that winning momentum."

In the second round of the Super League, JVW find themselves at number four on the log, with 30 points – just eight behind the University of Johannesburg in third, having won eight games in 16 outings.
