SABC Sport broke the news of the 37-year-old mentor’s shock exit from Chloorkop, due to an alleged rift with sporting director Flemming Berg, despite winning the inaugural African Football League [AFL] and the DStv Premiership title for the second season in a row as the sole head coach.
It is understood Mokwena had planned to take a sabbatical and possibly continue to work on his qualifications abroad, however, Wydad Casablanca have now entered the fray.
The public broadcaster has it on good authority that the Moroccan outfit see the ex-Orlando Pirates and Chippa United coach as the perfect candidate to fill their vacant post and help them return to greater heights.
Wydad finished a woeful sixth place in the Botola Pro League this past season, losing the title to bitter city rivals Raja Casablanca as ex-Pirates coaches Josef Zinnbauer and Fadlu Davids were in charge of an incredible unbeaten run over 30 matches.
Raja also pipped the Nasreddine Nabi-led AS FAR to the championship and Throne Cup double, with the Tunisian having now resigned, paving the way for his appointment by Kaizer Chiefs.
The decision by Wydad to turn their attention to Mokwena comes in the wake of official confirmation on Wednesday that Sundowns had parted ways with their head coach, even though he was still contracted to the club until 2027.
According to further information gathered by SABC Sport, it is believed Wydad would consider holding off on conducting interviews for a coach to give Mokwena time to mull over their offer.
When approached for comment on the next step for the coach, his agent Steve Kapelushnick confirmed there was interest in his client but did not want to give away too much.
“Obviously everything is still so fresh at the moment, but our phones haven’t stopped ringing – Rulani had a fantastic spell at Sundowns. It’s sad to have come to an end, but we will sit down and consider our options. That might be locally or abroad, we will see,” he said.
