Coach Nuri Sahin has expressed his concerns about the team's growing list of sidelined players, which now includes Marcel Sabitzer, who was forced to leave the pitch with a muscle issue during Saturday's Bundesliga match.
"When Sabi has to go off, it's usually not a good thing," Sahin admitted to Sky Germany, noting the team's already-thin squad."His muscle tightened up, and we just have to hope it isn't serious."
Sabitzer's injury added to an already extensive list, with Sahin revealing further knocks sustained during the game.
Defender Rami Bensebaini reportedly struggled with leg discomfort after a slip, while Jamie Bynoe-Gittens played through an ankle issue.
Felix Nmecha was also managing a shoulder injury, and forwards Serhou Guirassy and Maxi Beier are reportedly "at their limits," according to Sahin.
"We're running on fumes," he continued, emphasizing the need to make it to the international break despite their limited squad.
"Sahin hopes defenders Waldemar Anton and Julian Ryerson will recover in time for their upcoming Champions League clash with Sturm Graz. "We aim to have as many players fit as possible by Tuesday," he added.
Amid Dortmund's on-field struggles, captain Emre Can addressed the harsh criticism he has faced for his recent performances.
Following a string of poor results, Can acknowledged he hadn't been at his best but expressed frustration over what he described as "below-the-belt" remarks.
"I'm only human, trying to perform every week. It doesn't always happen," Can told Sky Germany. "I accept criticism, but if it's below the belt, I can't take it."
Determined to continue leading his side through challenging times, Can added, "I just want to keep playing football and support the boys. It's not always easy, but I try to be myself, even if some can't handle it."
