Nyatama hits back at Safa over coaching courses

Swallows FC coach Musa Nyatama has hit back at SAFA after his name was mentioned – and used as a case study – in the debate around unqualified tacticians in the Premier Soccer League.

During a roundtable discussion with journalists last week, SAFA technical director Walter Steenbok confirmed plans to make it compulsory for all professional coaches to hold a CAF A license or not sit in the dugout at all.

Steenbok mentioned the Dube Birds' young coach along with the club’s technical advisor, Morgan Mamilla, by suggesting they possess no tactical acumen.

Following their 1-0 win over Maritzburg United in the DStv Premiership at Dobsonville Stadium on Thursday night, Nyatama was given an opportunity by the media to respond.

“To be honest, I heard them talking about it, but I didn’t see it. But the question would be, ‘Does SAFA provide the CAF B or CAF A [courses]? That would be my question,” the former Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Swallows midfielder said.

SAFA want to streamline these requirements along with the decision taken by the continental mother body CAF, who insist coaches need to have their A license to be on the bench.

If they do not comply, the tacticians will not be allowed on the bench during the Champions League and Confederation Cup competitions.

“Do they provide it? If they do, then the coaches will go attend. My route is to try to get a CAF B and then A licenses – I want to learn and get the certificates,” Nyatama explained.
