Matrose, who joined the Buccaneers after a standout 2021/22 DStv Premiership season, spent another year honing his skills at Chippa United. While navigating the wings for the Chilli Boys, he faced a slew of top-flight defenders, but none left as lasting an impression as Mudau.
In an exclusive interview with KickOff, Matrose praised Mudau's relentless defensive prowess, stating, "It's Khuliso Mudau from Sundowns. He's a tough marker who sticks to you like glue.
"Personally, he consistently makes it incredibly difficult for me to bypass him. Without a doubt, he's been my most formidable opponent."
Matrose's sentiment echoes the broader consensus, as Mudau earned the title of DStv Premiership Defender of the Season for his remarkable performances in the 22/23 campaign, amassing 39 appearances in all competitions for the Brazilians.
Sundowns coach, Rulani Mokwena, lauded Mudau's unwavering consistency and exceptional character, remarking in October last year, "If there's been a player that has been extremely consistent in his performances in the past two seasons, it has to be Sailor (Mudau). That is also a reflection of the quality player that he is. Apart from [having] the qualities of being a top football player, [he also has] the qualities of being a very good human being."
Mudau has wasted no time making his mark in the new DStv Premiership season, scoring a vital last-minute equalizer during Sundowns' 1-1 draw against Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8 first-leg semi-final, reaffirming his reputation as a stalwart defender and a potent force for his team.
