Orlando Pirates claim top spot with Champions League win

Orlando Pirates secured top spot in Group C with a 2-0 CAF Champions League victory over CR Belouizdad on Sunday.

Relebohile Mofokeng opened the scoring after 20 minutes at the Orlando Stadium before Thalente Mbatha secured the result with his goal after 61 minutes, despite a late consolation from Abdelroauf Benguit.

The result saw the Buccaneers move onto 11 points; ahead of Al Ahly by one point, with one game remaining.

Belouizdad ended the afternoon in third place with six points, while Stade d'Abidjan prop up the standings with one point.

The home side started well and were full value for their lead when Mofokeng snuck in at the near post to put home a deflected Tshegofatso Mabasa shot.

Belouizdad had a chance to level the score soon after but Abderrhmane Meziane fired wide when put through on goal with only Sipho Chaine to beat.

Mohau Nkota and Khanyisa Mayo both had half chances as the action began to swing from end to end.

The away team created a good chance at the start of the second half with Islam Slimani somehow managing to drag a close-range shot wide of the target.

But any hopes of a way back into the tie was ended when Mbatha fired a rocket of a shot into the Belouizdad goal.

Pirates did endure a few nervy moments as they worked to keep their opponents out, and Abdelroauf Benguit finally found a way through, in the second minute of injury time, but it was too little too late, as Bucs celebrated an important win.
