Paul Merson encourages Arsenal's Mikel Arteta to sign Alexander Isak

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly keen to strengthen his attack, with Newcastle United's Alexander Isak emerging as a prime target.

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has suggested that a bid of 100 million pounds could force Newcastle to sell the Swedish striker, despite his long-term contract at St James' Park.

Arteta's side climbed to second in the Premier League after a 3-1 win over Brentford, narrowing the gap to leaders Liverpool to six points.

With Arsenal aiming to challenge for the title, Arteta is believed to have identified Isak as a player who could elevate the Gunners' ambitions.

Merson told Sky Sports: "Do Newcastle turn down 100 million pounds for Isak? Arsenal will have the money. That takes them to another level."

Isak, who has scored 125 career goals, remains under contract with Newcastle until 2028. However, the Magpies are reportedly trying to manage their spending to avoid breaching Financial Fair Play rules.

Talks over a new deal for Isak have stalled, with the player waiting to see if Newcastle secure Champions League football.

Despite manager Eddie Howe's reluctance to lose Isak, Newcastle may find it hard to reject a significant offer. Merson also praised the striker's abilities, adding, "I think Isak is unbelievable. I'd hate to mark him."

Arsenal are also linked with several other attacking targets, including Marcus Rashford and PSG's Randal Kolo Muani. Kolo Muani, who joined PSG for 77 million pounds, has struggled for game time this season.

His versatility could appeal to Arsenal, especially with Bukayo Saka sidelined for months.

Meanwhile, former Watford striker Troy Deeney has questioned whether Mikel Merino, Arsenal's 31 million pound summer signing, has the quality to succeed long-term. "He's neat, tidy, and keeps the ball ticking, but I'm not sure if he's up to Arsenal's level yet," Deeney told BBC Sport.

In a worrying development for Arsenal fans, Real Madrid are reportedly confident of signing defender William Saliba, with positive signals coming from the player's camp regarding a potential move to Spain.
