Bayern Munich opted to send the 18-year-old attacking midfielder on loan for a second consecutive season, and the decision has paid off.
Last season, Wanner spent time at SV Elversberg in Germany's second division, but this year, he chose Bundesliga football, despite interest from several European clubs.
"The game time was crucial for his development," said Bayern officials, as he found limited opportunities in Munich's crowded squad.
Wanner's rapid rise has sparked debate about his international future, with both Austria and Germany keen to secure his services.
According to Sky Sports' Kerry Hau, the German FA (DFB) is confident Wanner will choose Germany. National coach Julian Nagelsmann is reportedly keeping a close eye on him and could hand him a senior call-up if his form continues.
Having made his Bayern debut at 16, Wanner is part of a new generation of talent the club is nurturing.
Aleksandar Pavlovic, who broke through last season, is now a German international, and Wanner hopes to follow in his footsteps.
With Heidenheim competing in Europe this season, Wanner's target of ten goals and ten assists could be a game-changer for both his club and his future with Bayern.
