Pirates midfielder opens up on unexpected rise under Abdeslam Ouaddou

Orlando Pirates midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi admits he joined the Soweto giants with an open mind, never expecting to become a regular so quickly despite trusting his work ethic.

The 23-year-old was thrown into the deep end by coach Abdeslam Ouaddou following the departure of several key players at the start of the season. The pair had previously worked together briefly at Marumo Gallants.

Speaking to SABC Sport after earning Man of the Match honours in Pirates’ 2-1 Soweto Derby victory over Kaizer Chiefs, Mokobodi revealed he expected to be more patient before getting his opportunity.

"I just had to believe in my talent, work hard and be willing to learn. I know that when I get an opportunity I must use it well."

Asked what made the transition from Stellenbosch FC to Pirates so seamless, Mokobodi credited his fellow players.

On his accolade, handed to him after two assists for Pirates to overcome Chiefs in a pulsating fixture, Mokobodi spoke about his mindset leading up to the game.

"I asked God to give me strength and for me to play for the man of the match award. I know that if I play at my highest level then we are going to win."

He added that winning and getting all three points in the Soweto Derby is a moment he will forever cherish having only just arrived at Pirates.
