Pitso Mosimane: Allow Chiefs to follow their plan and give other coaches a chance

Kaizer Chiefs should be allowed to make up their mind and their choice about their next coaching project. This is how South Africa’s most successful football coach, Pitso Mosimane, responded when SABC Sport asked him about being linked to the club.

For some time now, Mosimane has been linked with the vacant Chiefs head coaching job and multitudes of their supporters were hoping that this would turn out to be true. But as SABC Sport reported recently, the club is close to finalizing a deal with the Belgian-Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi. Mosimane says other coaches should be given a chance.

''It is a big club, it is a big institution. Everywhere I go everybody would ask me. But, I'm a professional, I will not use that to put Kaizer Chiefs under stress over these things, it is not fair, because we don't know what is happening, what are they thinking and what is their vision. And why only me, there's other coaches who want that position,'' said Mosimane.

After leaving Mamelodi Sundowns and going to Al Ahly in Egypt, Mosimane, three-time CAF Champions League winner and record five-time Dstv premiership-winning coach, grew closer to Chiefs, his childhood club. Mosimane who is back in the country, focusing on the Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools programme, maintains that he’s got good relations with Amakhosi, with his son also playing for Amakhosi’s juniors.

''Let's give them a chance, they will show you the plan, I mean they are working on it - they are a big club. We have a good relationship with them, we talk anytime - we  speak on the phone, my boy is playing there, he is the top scorer in GDL under 13. If there was bad blood he would not be there, am I right? So there's no problems,'' added Mosimane.

Having recently returned from his second club in the Saudi Arabian Pro League, Abha FC, following their relegation to the lower division, Mosimane has a clear perspective on what Chiefs should focus on. For a club that has not won any silverware in nine seasons and had its worst-ever finish in top-flight football this past season (10th), Mosimane advises that Chiefs should prioritize returning to the CAF Champions League and continuing to build their profile there, a strategy that could potentially lead to a resurgence for the club.

Mosimane says a club like Orlando Pirates, who are heading to the CAF Champions League together with Sundowns next season, shouldn’t just focus on winning the league here at home but also doing well on the continent.
