PSL aims to meet with SAFA for clarity on the selection of referees

Premier Soccer League acting CEO Mato Madlala says they aim to meet with the South African Football Association [SAFA] to get clarity on how the football mother body selects referees for matches.

There have been a lot of complaints in the Betway Premiership regarding the level of officiating which includes an incident where Kaizer Chiefs striker Edson Castillo suffered an injury that will see him out until next year from a tackle by SuperSport United's Bilal Baloyi in Amakhosi 1-0 loss to SuperSport at the Peter Mokaba Stadium last month.

On Laduma’s SoccerZone former referee and SABC Sport analyst Victor Hlungwani insisted Amakhosi should have been awarded a penalty.

Speaking to Victor Molefe on the Prime Time Sports Show on Ukhozi FM Madlala says the meeting was postponed due to SAFA's other commitments.

"SAFA wrote a letter to me because what we were requesting from them is to explain to us how they select referees for games. They need to make us all understand because they are the only ones who know of the selection process,” Madlala said.

“We also want to know if these officials are chosen according to their experience, if maybe there's level A or B? We don't have that kind of information but you find that we fight amongst each other.

“You find that sometimes referees make mistakes but we end up fighting amongst each other. They said they were going to send us information but when they were supposed to do it, they told us that CAF had called them, and they have work that they have to do for CAF. “So, they ended up not coming. We are hoping that they will make time to meet with us because everyone wants to know how they choose referees for games."

Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie also recently confirmed to SABC Sport that as government they are ready to put down a deposit through sponsors, to pay towards the implementation of VAR.

The CEO adds that she's in a committee with some members from SAFA to make sure that VAR is introduced in South African football.

"In the other meeting that we had with SAFA, we did talk about VAR. I'm on the committee that will work on bringing VAR to the country. There are different types of VAR, there is lite, there are several types but now the big question is where are we going to get money to implement it?” she asked.

“We are still trying to find ways to secure money for the implementation of VAR so as the committee we are still talking to different VAR suppliers so that when we go back to SAFA GLC we know exactly where we will get the money from. We are definitely working on the VAR issue and the referee department from SAFA is also on the committee."
