PSL chairman Irvin Khoza confirms Betway Premiership prize money

Four months since the launch of Betway as the new title sponsor for the PSL topflight, chairman Irvin Khoza on Wednesday finally confirmed the prize money of R20-million to the champions.

Khoza said the delay was due to internal processes, adding that he will provide a further breakdown for the rest of the teams in the Premiership.

The chairman felt it was important to make the announcement ahead of the NSL elections in a weeks’ time.

"This week is my last week as chairman because next week there are elections, we don't know what's gonna happen so we must mop up all the outstanding issues for proper housekeeping,” Khoza said.

“Now when we announced the Betway sponsorship one thing that we omitted to announce at that point in time, in fact, two things, one of the things that we forgot to announce subject to some kind of internal discussion with the executive committee was the prize money.

“Today I'm gonna announce the prize money of the winner only. The winner of the Betway Premiership number one position, R20-million."

Khoza also revealed that the new trophy remains a work in progress.

"But also, what was important, something that we did not talk about was the trophy. The trophy is gonna take a very unique journey because it's a trophy that has got a lot of history, and a lot of culture elements around it. It's gonna take a bit of some time to finalise,” he added.

“It's a story on its own, it's a journey on its own. It's something monumental, it's something historical, something best to come out of this country. We've got so many things that are beautiful we forget to talk about them ourselves. So, the essence of the journey that's gonna be taken in finalising the trophy is gonna capture the essence of who we are as South Africans."
