The Premier Soccer League, according to SABC Sport sources, have begun talks of implementing the use of the video assistant referee [VAR] system in the domestic league.

It™s understood there were plans to test the system during the Carling Black Label Cup at FNB Stadium this weekend but, as things stand, world governing body FIFA have not been alerted in time and it is therefore not approved to be conducted.

But it is understood there will still be some use of the system, though it will be not be shown during the live broadcast of the day's matches, but instead only for the powers that be to assess the readiness to put the technology into practice locally.

There have been calls for VAR in the country as the standard of officiating, especially in the lower leagues, is viewed to be at an all-time low.

SABC Sport understands that the imminent use of VAR in the country was mentioned at the league™s annual general meeting in Sandton on Friday, and member clubs were informed that a œtrial run is expected this weekend.

The use of this technology was this week backed by World Cup-bound referee Victor Gomes, who told the public broadcaster™s sport desk that he did not see a future in the domestic league without VAR.

œWe were part of the birth of VAR, so we™ve been there [prepared for the technology] for a long time, said Gomes.

œI™ve always said to people, when I come and ref a local game, I already have to adapt because of the protocols to follow with VAR and, when you don™t have VAR in the match, you change a little bit.

"I don™t see the future of football - or refereeing - without VAR. I know there are plans in place and the sooner we get it done, the better for everybody.

AmaZulu take on Mamelodi Sundowns in the opening match of the one-day tournament at 9.30am at FNB Stadium tomorrow followed by the Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates immediately after.

The final will be at 5pm.
