PSL wrap: Spurs keep alive hopes of avoiding relegation, Citizens break winless run

Cape Town Spurs kept their slim hopes avoiding relegation alive, Cape Town City celebrated their first victory of 2024 while SuperSport and Sekhukhune could not be separated in PSL action on Tuesday.

Spurs keep alive slim hopes of avoiding relegation

Cape Town Spurs will live to fight another day to avoid relegation after battling to a 1-0 victory over Royal AM at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

The only goal of the game was scored by Gabriel Michael when he converted a penalty just after the hour mark.

The win sees Spurs still rooted to the bottom of the standings but the Cape side now close the gap to Richards Bay to five points.

It was a disappointing performance from Royal AM as they still have work to do in the remaining four matches to keep their place in the league.

Citizens break winless streak with victory over Swallows

Cape Town City registered their first win of the year after a 2-0 victory over Moroka Swallows at Athlone Stadium.

The Citizens had gone 11 matches without a win in all competitions since returning from the AFCON break but finally put in a worthy performance.

Second half goals from Darwin Gonzalez and substitute forward Joaquim Paciencia made sure the home side remain seventh in the standings.

Swallows are currently in 13th position on the table, only six points ahead of the relegation play-off position with three games remaining.

Matsatsantsa and Sekhukhune play to score draw

SuperSport United and Sekhukhune United could not be separated as they played to a 1-1 draw at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

The home side thought they had taken all three points when Bradley Grobler found the net in the 87th minute but the visitors had the final say when Chibuike Ohizu equalised with a minute of regulation time remaining.

Both teams still have three matches of the campaign remaining with Matsatsantsa sixth in the standings while Sekhukhune are fourth.
