JVW aim to replicate last season’s top three finish in HWBSL

JVW full-back Talia Swartbooi says the team is peaking at the right time in hopes of a top three finish, despite a slow start in the first quarter of the 2024 Hollywoodbets Super League.

The Bedfordview-based outfit has been out of the top six since the beginning of the current campaign, however, the team has recently gone five matches unbeaten - with two wins and three draws.

Swartbooi says managing to collect points in the last few games has seen the team get closer to their target of replicating last season’s top three finish.

"2023 was a massive year for us, we achieved a major milestone by securing a top-three finish for the first time, despite facing adversity, including a team rebuild, among other challenges," said Swartbooi.

"However, we did emerge stronger as a team, and I think this year we are confident that each result will bring us closer to replicating that success of the 2023 season."

Coach Mitchell Stevens charges gear up to face on-form Richmond United on Saturday afternoon at the University of Johannesburg Stadium, and Swartbooi says they have identified areas they can exploit to secure maximum points.

"The spirit in the camp is definitely positive, especially coming off a win [over Lindelani Ladies] last weekend, and our approach for this weekend's fixture is to secure maximum points," she added.

"In the first round of the season, we did share points with Richmond – playing away in De Aar does serve a bit of adversity, and Richmond are a team that do really thrive at home.

"But we have reviewed our past performance against them, as well as their most recent outings, and I think it's safe to say that we have identified their strengths as well as areas in which we can exploit to achieve our own goals.

"However, it is important to note that Richmond are a robust team, and we expect nothing else but for them to bring their A-game against us this weekend."
