R300K from three months ago still not in our account - Richmond Ladies boss

Richmond United Ladies chairman Amichad Amsterdam has opened up on the lack of support from the Northern Cape government.

While Gauteng government provides R550 000 to each of its participants in the Hollywoodbets Super League, Amsterdam revealed a R300 000 cheque received from the Northern Cape government in March is yet to reflect in their bank account.

"Last year they gave us R350 000 and earlier this year – it was 20 March, a day before the president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa came to DR, they gave us a cheque of R300 000, but it's been three months now and we are still waiting for the money to clear," Amsterdam explained.

“I handed in the form with our banking details but I'm still waiting. When I talk to them, they refer me to this one, who will refer me to that one, and we’ve ended up with no answers."

Amsterdam also told SABC Sport that last year Motsepe Foundation Championship club Hungry Lions was given R3-million while they were only allocated R300 000, a stark disparity given the fight for gender equality government continues to preach over.

"If you compare it with the men's team from our province, Hungry Lions, who are playing in the NFD, they are getting I don't know how much more than us," the chairman explained.

"When they received R3-million, they gave us the R300 000 which we are still waiting for. That's why I said they are not serious about women's football in our province.

“Maybe they don't understand the level at which we are playing. I even explained to them that our league is so big, if Richmond Ladies wins this league, then we will represent South Africa in Africa [CAF Women’s Champions League]."

Despite all the challenges that Richmond is having when it comes to resources, on the pitch they continue to punch above their weight.

They are currently ranked seventh on the log with 31 points from 19 matches and are ahead of at least three clubs with better resources, such as University of Johannesburg, Durban Ladies, and Tshwane University of Technology.

"You can see there's a big difference, but last season we finished just below the teams who have everything – your four varsities, your Sundowns, Royal AM, JVW as well.

“Those are the teams who are not struggling like we are struggling, but we managed to finish just below them in position number seven,” concluded Amsterdam.
