Rafael van der Vaart slams Bayern's Leroy Sane for underwhelming form

Former Netherlands international Rafael van der Vaart has voiced his discontent with Germany and Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane, accusing him of failing to maximise his potential.

In an interview with ran, Van der Vaart expressed his frustration, saying, "From my point of view, he only shows 20 percent of his incredible qualities. I hope he wakes up, that someone gives him a kick in the butt."

Van der Vaart further added, "You have to imagine what would happen if he really stepped on the gas. He's 28 years old now. I think he should have been at Kylian Mbappe's level a long time ago."

Sane, who has been recovering from groin surgery following the European Championship, is working hard to regain his fitness.

The 28-year-old began his professional career with Schalke 04 before moving to Manchester City in 2016. He returned to Germany in 2020, signing with Bayern Munich on a contract that runs until 2025.

At Bayern, Sane has amassed 48 goals and 50 assists in 175 appearances.

After undergoing surgery to address persistent groin issues, Sane has been making significant strides in his recovery. Just over a month into his running training, he has rejoined first-team sessions and reported positive progress.

"I feel fit, everything is going as planned so far. I was able to join in with the first-team training sessions.

"It went well, I had no problems, and I hope that it continues like that," Sane stated on FC Bayern Munich's official website.

Despite his optimism, Sane remains cautious about rushing his return. "We have deliberately left it open to give me the time, until I can say that everything feels perfect.

"We are on the right track. Weâ™ll see when the time comes," he concluded.
