Samukelo Kabini had given Galaxy the lead just after the half-hour mark and they thought they had done enough to earn maximum points before Chivaviro's late show.
Chiefs had the first opportunity to take the lead when Ashley Du Preez beat the offside trap and found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper but the forward could only find the side-netting.
The Rockets then went 1-0 as Kabini found himself unmarked at the box from corner and buried a header past Chiefs shot-stopper Bruce Bvuma.
Amakhosi head coach Nasreddine Nabi responded with a triple substitution at halftime as Mfundo Vilakazi, Tobogo Potsane and Chivaviro entered the fray.
Chivaviro came closest to getting the equaliser but saw his shot blocked while Vilakazi also had an effort saved by last-ditch defending.
Chiefs were pressing and finally found some joy at the death after Galaxy failed to clear from a corner and Chivaviro saw his shot go over the line.
The point means Amakhosi remain ninth in the standings with their next clash on 29 December when they take on Chippa United from home.
Galaxy, meanwhile, jumped up to 11th on the table and will travel to Royal AM in their fixture on 29 December.
