This high-profile transfer comes after Rodriguez's contract with Brazilian side Olympiacos was terminated earlier this summer.
Arriving as a free agent, Rodriguez's return to La Liga marks a significant moment for the club.
The transfer has now been finalised as the summer transfer window draws to a close.
Vallecano managed to navigate their financial planning effectively to accommodate Rodriguez's salary. By employing a strategy similar to the one used for Radamel Falcao, the club have secured Rodriguez's services to add star power for their landmark year.
Rodriguez is experiencing a career revival following a standout performance at the Copa America, which has thrust him back into the European football spotlight. Despite interest from several clubs, Rayo Vallecano made the decisive move to bring him back to Spain, fulfilling his desire to return to La Liga.
Reflecting on his past, Rodriguez made headlines when he joined Real Madrid a decade ago, in the summer of 2014, following a stellar World Cup campaign in Brazil.
At Real Madrid, he excelled for four seasons, showcasing his skills with key goals and assists. Though his return to the club in the 2019-20 season was less impactful, his earlier achievements remain notable.
In his first statement as a Rayo Vallecano player, Rodriguez expressed his enthusiasm: "I'm incredibly happy to join a historic club like Rayo Vallecano. I'm eager to contribute positively.
"I carry a sense of responsibility wherever I go, and I love to win. It's also a special year for the club."
He also referenced the influence of his compatriot Radamel Falcao: "Falcao is an idol for all Colombians; he did so much for our country. I hope to perform well here, as he did. The environment here is great, and the team is very competitive."
Vallecano's president, Raul MartÃn Presa, expressed his excitement about the signing: "This is a highly promising acquisition. It took less convincing than I expected; James was keen to come to Spain, particularly to Madrid. He arrives in peak form, having been the MVP of the Copa America."
Presa drew a parallel with Diego Maradona's move to Napoli: "This could be similar to when Maradona joined Napoli, though our main aim is to secure our place in La Liga."
With James Rodriguez on board, Vallecano have added a world-class talent to their squad, aiming to make a significant impact in their centenary season.
