While optimistic, Pellegrini is aware of the challenges ahead, particularly with the squad changes Betis have experienced during the summer transfer window.
Girona, often described as a "Champions League-calibre" team, were seen as a formidable opponent. Despite their own roster changes, Pellegrini believed Girona would still be a significant threat. "It's crucial to secure those first three points," Pellegrini is quoted as saying by MARCA. "Girona may have lost key players, but they've brought in others, and they are still a very competitive side."
Betis themself are in the midst of transition. Pellegrini has acknowledged that his squad wasn't yet complete, with the transfer window still open. "We approach the first match with the squad we've been able to assemble so far," he said. "There's still time to complete the roster, so we'll see what happens."
One of the biggest blows for Betis was the departure of forward Ayoze Perez, who had been instrumental for the team last season. Perez moved to Villarreal, a direct competitor for Betis in La Liga.
Pellegrini admitted the loss was significant. "Ayoze had a great season and is now part of the national team. He chose to join a direct rival, which is tough for us, but it was his decision."
Injuries have also played a part in the team's preparations. New signing Cedric Bakambu is ruled out until late September, and Isco, who joined Betis in the summer, isn't fully fit. "Isco is not ready yet, and we don't have a specific date for when he'll be at 100%," Pellegrini confirmed.
Looking to strengthen the attack, Pellegrini highlights the need for quality reinforcements. "If we bring in another forward, it has to be a key addition. We've lost ten players and only brought in five. Among those who left were three internationals and two captains. The new arrivals need to show why they're here."
Betis' defence has undergone significant changes as well, particularly in the full-back and centre-back positions. Pellegrini mentioned the arrival of players like Ricardo Rodriguez and Romain Perraud, as well as the promising pre-season performance of Diego Llorente. "We've seen a defensive overhaul. It takes time to integrate new players, but they've adapted quickly."
Pellegrini said that the progress of individual players would not hinge on the departure of others. When asked about Abde Ezzalzouli potentially stepping up after Ayoze's exit, Pellegrini said, "Every player needs to push themselves. Abde had ups and downs last season, but as he matures, his performances will improve. We have other options too, like Juanmi and Chimy Avila."
As for the team captaincy, Pellegrini has left the decision to the players. "The players will vote, and we'll see who they choose."
Despite the squad's ongoing transition, Pellegrini has remained confident heading into the Girona match. "Every year is different, but our commitment, ambition, and determination are the same. With 55,000 fans behind us, I'm sure we'll deliver for them."
