The club secured its second La Liga and UEFA Champions League double in just three seasons, following a previous triumph in 2021-22.
Additionally, they showcased their prowess by winning the Supercopa de Espana in Riyadh, overcoming both Atletico Madrid and Barcelona in the knockout stages.
However, Madrid's campaign was not without its hurdles. The team faced a shocking exit in the Copa del Rey, where they were eliminated by none other than Atletico.
This defeat was particularly stinging, as it came just months after Atletico handed Madrid their first league loss of the season on 24 September 2023, with Alvaro Morata scoring a brace and Antoine Griezmann adding another to seal a 3-1 victory in the Madrid derby.
Despite this setback, Madrid went on to dominate La Liga, clinching the title with four matches to spare. Interestingly, they struggled to overcome Atletico in both league fixtures, with a late goal from Marcos Llorente denying them victory in their return match at the Bernabeu, despite Brahim Diaz giving Madrid the lead.
Ultimately, Atletico proved to be Madrid's only conquerors last season, claiming two victories that had contrasting impacts. While the league defeat barely affected Madrid's overall dominance, the Copa exit dashed their hopes of a historic treble, an achievement that has always eluded the club.
Looking ahead to Sunday, Madrid are not approaching this upcoming clash with a vengeful mindset. Instead, their focus remains squarely on securing vital points to keep pace with a relentless Barcelona side, who continue to lead the title race.
This current Madrid squad, with its unique blend of experience and youthful enthusiasm, has chosen to look forward rather than dwell on past disappointments.
Winning at the Metropolitano is crucial; it would not only bolster their title defence but also enhance their confidence as they continue to chase both La Liga and Champions League glory this season.
