Kroos announced his shock exit from the game at the age of 34 earlier this year, with his last game in Madrid's iconic white shirt a Champions League final win over compatriots Borussia Dortmund at Wembley back in June.
Luis Milla, a former Real Madrid midfielder who spent seven seasons at the club, expressed his surprise at the team's struggles. Speaking at an event for Kombat, a brand of padel equipment, Milla acknowledged that the void left by Kroos is difficult to fill.
"Considering where the team was coming from, I think we all expected them to struggle less," said Milla. The former player believes that Carlo Ancelotti is still searching for a way to replace the German midfielder, but it won't be easy.
"I imagine Ancelotti is trying to find solutions, but it's tough within the current squad. Luka Modric is probably the closest to Kroos, but at this stage, you have to manage him carefully. He's not someone who can play every week."
Despite the slow start, Milla remains confident in Real Madrid's ability to turn things around. "Big teams need to show up in times of doubt, and Real Madrid, with all its talent, will certainly be competing for trophies by the end of the season," he said.
Meanwhile, Barcelona, a club where Milla also spent part of his career, has hit the ground running. Under new management, the Catalan giants have surprised many with their performances.
"They've changed coaches and completely shifted their approach. I've been pleasantly surprised by how well the players are responding and how they're playing," Milla added.
Another topic of discussion was the unfortunate injury to Dani Carvajal, which has further complicated Real Madrid's early-season problems. While some have blamed the packed schedule for the injury, Milla disagrees.
"With the way football is played now, maximum intensity and very high tempo, the calendar is tight, but I think Carvajal's injury is just bad luck. It's not due to wear and tear," Milla explained.
Real Madrid also face questions over the form of Kylian Mbappe, who has scored five goals in La Liga so far but hasn't met the sky-high expectations placed upon him.
Milla believes patience is needed. "He's adjusting to a new country and team. Yes, he's incredibly experienced and talented, but it's normal that he's still finding his feet. After all, the season has only just begun," said Milla.
Though challenges lie ahead for Real Madrid, there remains hope that the team's fortunes will improve as the season progresses.
