Majiya was left out of the final 23-woman squad that’s headed to the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and instead named as one of the three standby players. Coach Desiree Ellis selected a very strong and experienced side heading into this tournament, but Richmond Ladies owner Amichad Amsterdam is worried about how a teenager like Majiya is taking this omission.
"She didn't make it, she's actually on standby and we all know, I can't believe whenever they've called a home reserve to join the team based on someone getting injured in the team. So, Majiya will be at home for the duration of the World Cup. For me, it's just that they just selected her to make her feel good and you know to do that to a young kid, 19 years old, it can break her," he said.
Amsterdam has also questioned the arrangement that is being used for selecting standby players, taking them to the World Cup camp in New Zealand and just returning before the tournament starts.
"I don't think she will go with them because I don't understand the 'standby player'.I think that is not good at all for her, travelling all the way with the team to Australia, and New Zealand and just before the World Cup starts then she must come back," the owner explained.
"I'm not sure how she's gonna feel because I already spoke to her over the phone, just to motivate her and that she must not give up now because I know she put it [hard work] in everything. She even neglected school, that's how she concentrated to be part of the World Cup."
