After an impressive loan spell at Girona, the 23-year-old is willing to adhere to the club's wishes for his future, citing his commitment in a recent interview with Diario AS.
When questioned about his potential return to Atletico, having spent the previous season on loan at Mirandes, Riquelme was transparent about his aspirations, saying, "I have always voiced my desire to be here, but right now, my focus is on the European Championships."
As he competes with Spain's under-21 side, who have advanced to the quarter-finals, facing Switzerland, Riquelme remains open to the club's guidance. "I will do as they say. I suppose they will grant me a few days, but I am at Cholo's disposal," he confirmed to Diario AS.
Riquelme aims to carve out a significant role in Atletico's first-team, a feat not achieved since Saul Niguez's emergence. Addressing Diego Simeone's reputation for youth development, Riquelme humbly stated, "It's not something I've pondered upon. I focus on continuous improvement."
However, doubts linger about where Riquelme fits into Atletico's tactics. At Girona, he has showcased his versatility, playing as a number 10 or a wide winger. Nonetheless, these positions have not been utilized in the Atletico team towards the end of the season.
Regarding his role, Riquelme asserted, "This year at Girona, I have featured in the middle, and I believe I've performed well. I will comply with their requests and defend the position assigned to me to the best of my abilities."
While Riquelme's future at Atletico seems promising, other clubs have expressed interest in him. Rayo Vallecano and Valencia are keeping a close eye on his situation, while Girona is eager to have him back.
Regarding the possibility of returning to Girona, Riquelme revealed, "I'm unsure. I felt at home there, and they treated me incredibly. It's a fantastic club that's growing, and I can't see a reason why I wouldn't consider a return one day."
Having enjoyed a successful first campaign back in La Liga, causing disruption among defences, Riquelme's versatility could make him a game-changing substitute. However, without a potential change in formation from Simeone, securing regular playing time could prove challenging.
As the new La Liga season approaches, Riquelme's commitment to Atletico Madrid remains unwavering, though the uncertainty surrounding his position adds intrigue to his future at the club.
