The Buccaneers had taken the lead in the second half through a deflected strike from 17-year-old Relebohile Ratomo but could not hold out for a seventh consecutive league victory.
The result means Pirates are two points clear of SuperSport United in the race to end second in the PSL table with two matches of the campaign remaining.
The Soweto giants only have themselves to blame for only getting a point from the contest as they dominated proceedings but could not put their opponents away.
The home team squandered a couple of gilt-edged opportunities to score in the first half with forwards Deon Hotto and Kermit Erasmus the guilty culprits.
The first chance fell to Hotto, who was clear on goal after being played in by Erasmus, but the former blasted his effort over the bar instead of calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net.
Just a minute later, Erasmus then did well to round goalkeeper Mondli Mpoto but his shot was brilliantly cleared off line by Jabulani Ncobeni.
The Buccaneers eventually took a deserved a lead ten minutes after the halftime break when Ratomo saw his long-range shot deflect into the back of the net off Elias Pelembe, leaving Mpoto stranded.
Royal AM offered little going forward throughout the encounter although Sedwyn George was put through on goal but the forward saw his effort saved by on-rushing shot-stopper Sipho Chaine.
The visitors, however, found another wind in the dying stages of the match and Masuku burgled a point when he headed in Ncobeni cross in the second minute of injury-time.
