Rulani Mokwena confirms Zungu now a priority transfer target

Wydad Athletic Club coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed formal talks between the Morocco giants and midfielder Bongani Zungu are ongoing.

The 31-year-old is currently a free agent after leaving Mamelodi Sundowns in June, a few weeks before the club’s surprising decision to also part ways with Mokwena.

Speaking to the SA Football Journalists’ Association from Casablanca on Thursday afternoon, Mokwena offered the latest on his interest in snapping Zungu up.

"I can speak about Bongani Zungu because he's not attached at the moment – there is a huge possibility, I'm a big Bongani Zungu fan, I think everybody knows that," said Mokwena.

"I love Bongani Zungu as a person because this is what makes him a top football players – he's an incredible human being, and we just have to see because it's a bit more complicated than what people think, but it is a big possibility."

With that said, Wydad do still have a FIFA transfer ban in place that is yet to be overturned by the world governing body, with Mokwena also providing an update thereon.

"One of the things that we discussed upon my arrival, of course, was the transfer ban, but I think we've got an incredible board, with an incredible president, so when he tells me this is something we should not be too worried about, I think mine is just to trust," he stressed.

"So far none of the things that they've told me have proven to be otherwise, so I only live in that space where I can trust what I've been told, and what I've been told is that it's something we shouldn't worry too much about.

"Of course, we've got a responsibility to put together the squad, and moreover for the FIFA Club World Cup that comes [next year], and for sure I think the club will definitely be strong and have the right players to compete in that space."
