Rulani Mokwena destined for bigger things on the continent - Thabo Senong

Former Bafana Bafana assistant coach Thabo Senong says Rulani Mokwena’s Mamelodi Sundowns departure is a massive blow for young, up-and-coming coaches in the country.

SABC Sport on Tuesday broke the news that Mokwena and Sundowns were set to part ways, with the club then issuing confirmation thereof on Wednesday through an official statement.

Senong, who has worked with and against Mokwena at youth level, says the reigning DStv Premiership Coach of the Season had a positive impact on South African football.

"We all know that Coach Rulani is an asset to South African football, he represents excellence in many ways, and the fact that a coach who has never played professional football can actually be excellent – like the likes of Jose Mourinho," said Senong.

"But also, he represents that young coaches, if given a chance, can excel in the global space, and he has shown that by how he has transformed Mamelodi Sundowns as a team.

"If you look at their style of play, and if you look at their points acquired – we've never had a situation where you see league champions leading the log with around 23 points, so it was total dominance."

During his second spell at Sundowns, Mokwena won a total seven trophies, including four league titles and the inaugural African Football League title.

Senong, echoing the sentiments of many, is confident Mokwena is destined for even greater heights.

"It's a huge loss for Mamelodi Sundowns, I'm sure, but I have no doubt that he's an asset for the continent because of his commitment to remaining a student of the game," he added.

"I'm sure a lot of big clubs in the North African space, and across the continent, cannot wait to rope him into their programmes and projects.

"I can only wish him all the best, we know it's the nature of football – coaches come and go, but I'm sure there will be another opening where he'll be able to utilise his talent again."
