Rulani Mokwena reacts to Sundowns’ record 72-points in a single season

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena believes setting a new record 72-points in the DStv Premiership could be the start to leaving a legacy at the club.

The Brazilians reached the milestone on Saturday afternoon following their 1-0 win over Stellenbosch FC as they continue to celebrate their title triumph in style, while also retaining their unbeaten run.

Mokwena had this to say about collecting the highest number of points in a single season.

''I will steal one of Jurgen Klopp's quotes when he says it doesn't really matter what people think of you when you arrive but what people say about you when you leave. That's how I feel about the record point, maybe that's the reflection that will take place the day I leave Sundowns, which is still a very very long way,'' said Mokwena.

His predecessor Pitso Mosimane previously held the record with 71 points in charge of Sundowns eight years ago, losing three matches during that campaign.

Mokwena admits what he has achieved with the current group hasn’t “sunk in yet”.

''I don't think it is something I have already thought about. It hasn't sunk into my brain but it is a huge compliment to this special group of players - it is something that is not easy to do,'' added Mokwena.

Mokwena was asked which fixture he has found the most difficult despite none of his rivals not able to get past Sundowns so far.

''I think it will depend, because every DStv Premiership game has a different components to it, games that are more tactical, will give you tactical challenges,'' he concluded.

In looking ahead to defending their title next season, the Downs coach was also quizzed about the potential targets to strengthen the squad.
