With Mamelodi Sundowns expected to complete the signing of left back Terrence Mashego today, co-coach Rulani Mokwena told reporters during a press conference at Chloorkop that the Brazilians will always target the best.
SABC Sport reported on Wednesday that the reigning DStv Premiership champions were on the verge of confirming that the Bafana Bafana international would be joining them from Cape Town City for a fee believed to be around more than R10-million.
Mashego landed at OR Tambo International this morning.
Until both clubs make an official statement, he is not a Sundowns player and because he isnt a Sundowns player officially, Id like to refrain from discussing him, was Mokwenas initial response.
But what I can say to you is that we want the best players in this team, and we try to get the best players in this team. When they become available in the market we have an obligation to our supporters to make sure that we move in that space to make our team as competitive as we possibly can.
Mashego will sign a five-year contract and could very well be available for the clubs league game on Sunday when they host AmaZulu at Loftus Versfeld Stadium - he is fit and has been playing regularly for City.
He joins a long list of quality players signed by the Brazilians this season already, among them Marcelo Allende (Chilean), Sipho Mbule, Ronwen Williams and Bongani Zungu to name a few that arrived at Chloorkop.
Thats why we have Marcelo here, as you guys already said, we beat off a lot of good competition to get Marcelo Allende - he has a proven pedigree. He plays for his national team, imagine the quality and calibre of the players in the Chilean national team and he is able to sit here with us and work with us every day, Mokwena added.
That is the place that we are in, we recruit the best players. Of course, at this moment in time when we bring in we have to let go because you cant have your cake and eat it. But you cant have too many - thats the honest truth. But the club will make an official statement.
