SAFA plans to bid for the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup

SAFA plans to bid for the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup

The possibility of South Africa bidding to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup is back on the table.

South African Football Association (SAFA) President Danny Jordaan revealed that this also formed part of their discussion with the new Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, earlier this week.

SAFA had bided to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup and went through the first two phases before pulling out when the much-needed government support was not forthcoming.

But Jordaan, speaking to the media yesterday, revealed that the meeting with McKenzie was so fruitful that discussions around the bidding for the 2031 World Cup are on the table.

"We have already expressed the view that we want to host the World Cup in 2031 after Brazil and he said he's very keen we must bring the proposal and he will support it. So, it was a very constructive, positive meeting and we are very encouraged with the meeting," Jordaan said.

Brazil won the bid to host the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The South American country also hosted the 2014 FIFA Men’s World Cup. Africa has never hosted the Women’s World Cup.

Accompanied by his Vice Presidents, SAFA National Executive Committee members, and senior management, Jordaan met with McKenzie and his deputy Peace Mabe in an introductory meeting on Thursday.

He says they will meet again in 30 days to revisit some of the discussed agenda points.

"We had a meeting with him, it was a highly successful, very positive meeting and we are very encouraged, very positive and very enthusiastic to recognise that the minister is quite clued with all aspects of South African football and he asked that we must work together, in 30 days we are gonna have a further engagement."
