Sami Khedira urges VfB Stuttgart to embrace the Bernabeu challenge

Sami Khedira has urged his former club, VfB Stuttgart, to display bravery in their UEFA Champions League opener against Real Madrid on Tuesday.

Stuttgart's return to Europe's premier competition for the first time since the 2009/10 season sees them face a formidable challenge at the Santiago Bernabeu, where they will encounter a team featuring Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and reigning champions Real Madrid.

Khedira, who was part of Stuttgart's squad during their last European campaign, later moved to Real Madrid, where he enjoyed a successful stint.

"There's only one way to approach this match: with courage," Khedira stated, according to the Bundesliga site, emphasising that Stuttgart must not be intimidated by the grandeur of the Bernabeu.

Reflecting on his experiences, Khedira remarked, "I know the Bernabeu from both sides - as a Real player and as an opponent with Juventus. If you get overwhelmed by the atmosphere, you've already lost.

"The key is to harness the stadium's energy and stay focused. Real Madrid has the ability to produce something extraordinary at any moment, whether it's the 91st, 92nd, or even the 97th minute."

Now a FIFA World Cup winner, Khedira, who rose through the ranks at Stuttgart and was part of their Bundesliga-winning team in 2006/07, will be in Madrid to witness the game.

"I arrived in Madrid a few days ago," he said. "My focus is on sport and engaging with the club.

"I'm eager to see how VfB Stuttgart tackle the challenge at the Bernabeu."
