Vusimuzi Mncube and Linda Mntambo were on the score sheet for the home side while Tshegofatso Mabasa found the back of the net for the Buccaneers.
Pirates coach Jose Riveiro opted not to start his four Bafana Bafana players that came back from the international break and it led to a disjointed start to the contest.
Sekhukhune took the lead just after the half-hour mark when Mntambo found space on the edge of the box and played in Mncube who applied the finish.
The Soweto giants threatened to equalise before halftime but could not break down the stubborn defence from the home team.
The hosts then used the counter-attack to good effect after the interval when Mntambo doubled the lead in the 51st minute.
It was a hammer blow to Pirates with Riveiro then looking to his bench to turn things around as Zakhele Lepasa and Lesedi Kapinga entered the fray.
The subs seemed to lift the visitors as Mabasa pulled a goal back in the 56th minute to set up an exciting finish.
The Buccaneers then threw the kitchen sink in search of the equaliser but again the Sekhukhune were resolute at the back to gain maximum points from the contest.
