Gonzalo Montiel, the Argentine footballer who achieved remarkable success in the 2022-23 season, finds himself embroiled in a serious legal matter.
Reports from Spanish nationwide daily sports newspaper Mundo Deportivo suggest that Montiel has been charged with sexual abuse, specifically a crime involving multiple perpetrators.
The charge stems from an incident that allegedly occurred on January 1, 2019, in Argentina, as reported by the victim. However, during his testimony, the Sevilla defender attempted to distance himself from the accusations, pointing the finger at one of his friends, Acosta Alexis, according to Mundo Deportivo.
"(The victim) angrily screamed, blaming me entirely for not taking care of her. I couldn't comprehend what she meant. She informed me that (Acosta) Alexis had driven her home, and prior to that, they had been inside my father's parked car on the premises."
Montiel's future with Los Nervionenses next season hangs in the balance amid this controversy.
The player played a pivotal role in securing victory for both Argentina in the World Cup final and Sevilla in the Europa League final, securing their seventh title in the competition.
Sevilla have refrained from commenting on the situation as the case unfolds. The ongoing legal proceedings will determine the outcome for Montiel, leaving his club and fans anxiously awaiting further developments.
