Spain beat France in eight-goal thriller to claim Olympic men's football gold

Spain prevailed in an eight-goal thriller to beat France 5-3 after extra time and win the Olympic men's football gold medal for the first time since 1992.

Sergio Camello grabbed a brace in the added period to settle a Parc des Princes classic after France had levelled by scoring twice in the final 11 minutes of normal time.

Thierry Henry's Les Bleus started aggressively and took an 11th-minute lead when Alex Baena's poor clearance fell to Enzo Millot and goalkeeper Arnau Tenas made a hash of his swerving shot.

Baena atoned for his error inside seven minutes with a smart assist that Fermin Lopez converted from close range.

Barcelona striker Lopez scored his sixth goal at these Olympics seven minutes later following in at the far post after Guillaume Restes had failed to hold Abel Ruiz's effort.

Spain were further in front three months later as Baena curled a delicious free-kick from 20 yards inside Restes' near post.

Tenas celebrated a fabulous reaction stop from Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and Manu Kone headed against the crossbar.

France looked dead and buried but Maghnes Akliouche diverted home Michael Olise's free-kick, and deep into stoppage time Mateta kept his cool after France were awarded a penalty for holding in the box following a VAR review.

Camello proved the hero, however, with a brilliant dinked chip and a last-gasp clincher as Spain claimed gold for the first time since Barcelona 1992 when Luis Enrique and Pep Guardiola were in their ranks.
