The Citizens were 2-0 ahead after Lorenzo Gordinho and Darwin Gonzalez found the back of the net but Devon Titus, with a brace, and Sinethemba Mngomezulu hit back for the hosts in front of a boisterous crowd in the Cape Winelands.
It was the visitors who were quickly out of the blocks in the contest as Gordinho pounced in the second minute, netting from a rebound after a goal-mouth scramble.
Eric Tinkler's charges then weathered somewhat of a storm before doubling their advantage in the 42nd minute when Gonzalez played a neat one-two with Juan Camilo Zapata before the Venezuelan tucked home his effort.
Stellies though did not just lay down and feel sorry for themselves and pulled a goal back on the stroke of halftime when Titus latched onto a long ball over the top of the City defence and beat goalkeeper Darren Keet.
The home fans were in raptures ten minutes after the interval when Titus equalised, the forward ghosting in on the far-post to finish a cross from Junior Mendieta.
The comeback was complete seven minutes from full-time when substitute Sinethemba Mngomezulu found plenty of space in the box and made no mistake burying his chance.
The three points was much-needed for Stellies as they jump to 12th place in the standings while Cape Town City remain seventh.
