Stellenbosch shock SuperSport United to secure MTN8 semi

Stellenbosch secured their place in the semi-finals of the MTN8 with 1-0 extra-time defeat of SuperSport United on Sunday.

There was no separating the two sides during 90 minutes of their quarter-final tie at the Peter Mokaba Stadium but Andre de Jong came off the bench to net his side's winner in the 99th minute.

Gavin Hunt's Matsatsantsa had been quickest out of the blocks at the start of the game with Siphesihle Ndlovu firing just over the target from outside the box after the opening exchanges.

Shandre Campbell saw his early drive well saved by Stellies stopper Sage Stephens as the home side remained on the front foot.

Iqraam Rayners was lively on the flanks for Steve Barker's men and conjured up a shot with 12 minutes on the clock, but fired just wide.

SuperSport attackers Ronald Pfumbidzai and Terrence Dzvukamanja both could have done better with their efforts after some good approach play, but failed to find their mark.

Devin Titus was then wasteful for the away team as he latched onto a good Kgaogelo Sekgota ball, on the half-hour mark, only to direct his header into the hands of Washington Arubi.

Rayners, meanwhile, put a close-range header over the bar from a well-hit Fawaaz Basadien corner-kick as the first half drew to a close.

It was Stellies who started the second half the stronger of the two sides, with Jayden Adams just off target with a header from a good Rayners cross.

But SuperSport were not to be outdone as Gamphani Lungu, Ronald Pfumbidzai and Dzvukamanja all threatened in quick succession, but with no end product.

Campbell at least forced a save from Stephens just past the hour mark, while the remainder of the game was scattered with half chances.

Any one of two teams could have claimed a last-gasp victory but Rayners and Basadien both fired well off target in the dying seconds as Grant Margeman made of mess of his chance, allowing the game to go into extra-time.

It was still too tight to tell just which way this tie would swing, but the introduction of De Jong for Adams proved to the be masterstroke as the substitute found the winning goal after just 20 minutes on the field.

Basadien came good with another delivery, and a fresh De Jong made no mistake with his close-range header.

Pfumbidzai led the SuperSport fight back with a real chance with 114 minutes played, but his shot was too high.

Stellies substitute Anicet Oura was denied by Arubi as he looked to extend his side's lead, while the last chance for SuperSport fell to Margeman in the 120 minute but the midfielder was unable to make his opportunity count.

Stellies will now join Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs in the semi-finals.
