Stellies women’s team dreams of playing in the Hollywoodbets Super league

Nathan Peskin, head coach of the newly acquired Sasol League side Stellenbosch Women’s Football Club, says every team playing in the lower ranks aims to be in the Hollywoodbets Super League – and they are no different.

But he is under no illusion that it will be an easy job to get to the top, more so because they are a new team. The club came into existence when Stellenbosch FC, which campaigns in the DSTV Premiership, bought the status of Matties earlier this year. With seven matches played in the current campaign, they sit fourth on the table in the Western Cape Stream B of the Sasol League.

''I don't think there is any coach who is coaching a Sasol League franchise team that hasn't got aspirations and it doesn't matter if it's Hollywoodbets, it is whatever that is above you, wherever the next step is. That is what we aspire to, it is human nature. It is a part of our long term plan but there is no pressure of achieving that right now,'' said Peskin.

Peskin says that should they not gain promotion to the Hollywoodbets Super League through the play-offs, and an opportunity arose to buy status, it is something they could look into - but will need serious discussions as it’s not an easy move.

''If there's an opportunity and the club management and leadership have that in their immediate sights, which I know that it is an agenda point and it is part of the vision but that is not the question I can answer out right, I do know it is part of the vision whether something comes available and will be bought right now I don't know, we will have a discussion as to say are we ready for it?,'' added Peskin.

Formerly with Vasco da Gama and the University of the Western Cape, Peskin is excited by the prospects of not having to worry about facilities – something that many teams struggle with, which affects their performance.

Peskin says belonging to a well-established brand like Stellenbosch FC has made life easier for him and his players, with several benefits that go with the status. Although they feel a little pressure to emulate the Men’s First Team, they are well aware that their journey has just started.

Peskin is also excited that the women’s team has access to a well-travelled and experienced coach like Steve Barker, who led the Men’s team to a third-place finish in the PSL, and also won the Carling Knockout Cup. By virtue of finishing third, the Cape Winelands outfit will feature in their first ever CAF Confederation Cup tournament.
