De Jong was again influential at the weekend, helping Stellies eliminate AmaZulu by scoring the winning goal to progress in the Carling Knockout.
Barker described the player as one of the “underrated” stars in the PSL.
"My opinion, probably one of the most underrated footballers in the country. He's just like you said, simplicity at its best, he's got a good first touch, controls the ball, and links play for us from defence to attack. He's a smart footballer and he's scoring goals," Barker said.
"So, he's become a key player for us, and also hoping that he gets himself back into the New Zealand national team. I think he deserves it, he's shown consistency for me now over the last 18 months and is a valuable asset. I like him because he's smart, he's a smart footballer, tactically very disciplined, tactically very aware, hopefully that can continue."
The coach also gave an update on their home venue as the Danie Craven Stadium has been undergoing maintenance.
"It is improving and there's next week the Stormers game there and then I'm hoping for Marumo Gallants next home game, we can play there," the coach explained.
Stellies are through to the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup, and Barker is convinced their campaign on the continent will make them a stronger team.
"I said a couple of years back when we fought relegation and people were like, 'This club might not [make it]. Second season and they are already fighting relegation.’ I knew that going through difficulties, sacrifice and suffering, that makes you tougher and stronger for the future,” he added.
“This again, this competition is about learning a lot of different things but what it is doing, it's bringing the team together and knowing that we have to support each other and fight for each other. Everybody when given the opportunity has to put their hand up and take that opportunity and contribute."
