Supersport draw at Chippa to hand Sundowns DStv Premiership title

Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned PSL champions on Saturday evening after Supersport failed to beat Chippa United in Port Elizabeth.

With only six matches remaining for second-placed Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United (third) and Kaizer Chiefs (fourth), the maximum number of points any of the three chasers can finish on is 58.

That means with Sundowns currently on 59 points, they can no longer be overtaken in the race for the title.

Despite not participating in league action that weekend due to their final CAF Champions League group stage match against Coton Sport, Rulani Mokwena's team can celebrate their victory at Loftus Versfeld.

In Saturday's match at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Chippa took the lead with a goal from Ronald Pfumbidzai, whose long-range strike beat Ricardo Goss in goal.

Despite SuperSport United's attempts to level the score in the first half, Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabili held them at bay.

In the second half, SuperSport United made some changes and finally found an equalizer through Ghampani Lungu's first league goal of the season in the 71st minute.

However, it was not enough to secure a win and claim the championship title, leaving Mamelodi Sundowns to take the crown.

Elsewhere, AmaZulu failed to come away with a single point in their home encounter against Swallows.

A 29th-minute strike from Dube Birds man Kagiso Malinga was enough to hand the hosts a defeat at Princess Magogo Stadium.

The result helped Swallows leapfrog Chippa into 13th position in the standings, while Usuthu are in 10th after two consecutive defeats.
