The victory is their second consecutive at the competition and secures them a spot in the knockout stages.
Italy entered the match with an unbeaten streak of five games, and Sofia Cantore initially threatened the Swedish defence with a few close chances. However, Sweden weathered the early storm and gradually gained momentum. Stina Blackstenius and Fridolina Rolfo's incisive runs troubled Italy, but the Italian defences solid sliding tackles kept them at bay.
Despite Italy's previous record of 15 defeats against Sweden, their hopes of turning the tide dimmed in a late first-half collapse.
Jonna Andersson's expertly taken corners led to two goals, with Amanda Ilestedt converting the first in the 39th minute, scoring her second goal of the tournament. Just five minutes later, Rolfo struck at the back post, and Blackstenius added a third, capitalizing on Italy's defensive confusion.
The second half brought no respite for the Azzurre, as Ilestedt continued her aerial dominance from corners, securing her brace and pushing Italy's deficit to four goals. It was the first time in their Women's World Cup history that Italy conceded four or more goals in a single game.
Sweden's superiority was evident throughout the match, with substitute Rebecka Blomqvist putting the icing on the cake with a swift counter-attack goal, bringing the score to an emphatic 5-0.
The victory showcased Sweden's impressive form at the Women's World Cup, as they reach the knockout stages for the eighth time in nine attempts, solidifying their status as serious contenders for the coveted title.
