Thabiso Kutumela resurfaces in KZN after Mamelodi Sundowns exit

SABC Sport understands that, following his recent Mamelodi Sundowns departure, striker Thabiso Kutumela has found a new home in KwaZulu-Natal.

The forward had returned from his January loan spell at Cape Town City, but it was then later announced he would not be staying at Chloorkop along with defender Brian Onyango as well as midfielders Gaston Sirino and Bongani Zungu.

He will join Richards Bay ahead of the start of the 2024/25 season.

Kutumela, who has also been on the books of Orlando Pirates, signed for Sundowns in July 2021 on the back of finishing as the top goal scorer for Maritzburg United.

However, his stint with The Brazilians was not as successful as he’d hoped with only 38 appearances and five goals to his name.

He did win the DStv Premiership in the seasons when he made sporadic appearances, but had been sent out on loan during the other campaigns in which Downs were crowned champions in search of regular game time.

Under coach Vusumusi Vilakazi at Richards Bay the striker will be desperate for a fresh start with a side that flirted with relegation until surviving in the play-offs last month.

At his most prolific, Kutumela scored 28 goals in 74 matches for The Team of Choice, paving the way for his transfer to Sundowns to reunite with coach Rulani Mokwena, who had been part of the Pirates technical team while he was there.

Mokwena has also left Sundowns following an alleged rift with sporting director Flemming Berg and has received an offer from Wydad Casablanca in Morocco.
